Cast on at armholes

Okay....after much frustration, I finally got to the armholes. I dread the massive digging into magazines searching for the technique for casting on mid-row. What really throws me is where Grumperina says "the knitted cast on in purl forms a nice snug edge". I know I have never seen that in any of my books and magazines.
Please....somebody point me to the web site that will detail this out for me. I have got my first set of stitches on a holder and am in a holding pattern.

Hi Cyndye,

Here's how it works.

You know the knitted cast-on, just in general? You have a stitch on the left needle, insert right needle into stitch as if to knit, pull a loop through, then put it on the needle. Rinse and repeat.

Here it's the same idea.

When it's time to cast-on for the underarms, you will need to take your work and turn it around. Okay, now you have some stitches on the left needle. Proceed with knitted cast-on BUT instead of doing pseudo-knit stitches, do pseudo-purl stitches. Insert needle as if to purl, wrap yarn, pull through, place on needle. Repeat until it's time to join the other stitches (at which point, turn your work around again)!

It makes such a nice, clean edge on the right side. SO nice.

Confusion again. I know how to do knit cast-on. Inserting needle between stitches, wrap, pull through and put on needle.
So, on purl cast-on, I reverse the work, then insert the right needle from back to front and purl, putting the new stitch on the left needle. OR...do I just do it in the front leg of the stitch???
I gotta get a new technique book to learn all these new ways of knitting.

Well, be careful not to confuse the knitted cast-on and the cable cast-on. In the knitted cast-on, you put the needle right into the stitch as if to knit, pull loop through, place on needle. In contrast, in the cable cast-on, you put the needle **between** the stitches, draw a loop, put on needle.

Is my previous explanation clear now? Just put through the front leg as if to purl, purl, place loop on needle, repeat.

Oh my gosh... I'm already past the armholes, but I don't think I did anything even close to what y'all are talking about. I really am not sure what I did, but somehow I managed to cast on stitches in mid-row... Am going to post a pic of it, and am hoping I don't find out I've done something majorly wrong...

Thanks tons Grumperina. You cleared up exactly what I needed. I need to write this down in my technique notebook.
