once more, with feeling

I had to rip out my Tempting II last night when I finally admitted to myself that the gauge was way off and that the finished knitting resembled gauze...

But, I did another swatch on size 5's (is seems everyone had to go down to 5's, didn't they?) and here I am (please ignore the socks - I am not a monogamous knitter):

Someone should send a note to knitty or something. Ahwell, onwards :D

i went down to sixes, but yeah. i think the gauge should be given in the same stitch pattern as the pattern of the field of the sweater. but then jenna has been knitting a lot longer than i have; maybe she knows something i don't (in fact, i'm certain she does). so i just adjust my needle size, grateful for the advice of the folks here (who helped me figure that out), and move on ;)

I believe the reason the swatch is done in stockinette is because ribbing is too difficult to get an accurate gauge on. Some people stretch their ribbing gauge swatches a LOT, others don't stretch it at all, and everyone at both ends of the scale think they "got gauge".

As Lisabe says, there is a lot of stretch to this one. Go smaller when in doubt.

Ohh now I'm nervous! I had to go up (to a size 10!)to get gauge, and I though i was a loose knitter. I usually have to go down a size or 2 to get gauge. I only have a few inches done, so I better try it on!
