I am trying to use the crochet method for the provisional cast on. This is my first time using it and I know I'm missing an obvious step. I even went to StichDiva.com and the online videos for guidance. After I've crochet the desired number of stitches onto the needle - what do I do? All the sites I see show you removing the axillary yarn with a lot of rows of the working yarn already completed. What is the next step? Am I just picking up stitches with my real yarn after using the crochet cast on method with the waste yarn? Please assist. I'm really itching to start Sahara.

I was going to say the same thing as Shannon! I loved wendy's provisional cast on, it is the one I used. SOOO EASY! She's even got it in a PDF for easy downloading and printing!

After doing the crochet provisional cast on, you simply knit those stitches as you would with a regular cast on. The only difference is that you will be able to unravel the cast on edge very easily to place those live stitches on your needles when you get to that point. I haven't check out Wendy's tutorial but to answer your question, just knit the stitches and those new stitches will be your "cast on" edge. Hopefully that helps you out!
Thanks for the responses. I did look at Wendy's which doesn't use a crochet cast on, but was trying to use the picture reference from the pattern. I'll see how it develops tomorrow and keep you all posted. Wish me luck. : 0 )

Yep, now that you have the stitches cast on with the crochet hook, you grab your working yarn and begin knitting it onto the waste yarn that you used for the provisional cast on. later, once you have all those stitches on like in the picture, you will remove the waste yarn (very, very carefully) and start knitting again in the other direction. It's pretty cool! Good luck!
Last question girls...I think it's becoming clearer.... Do I wait to remove the waste yarn until I'm ready to work the other side?

Susan -- you just leave the crocheted edge alone until the pattern says to remove it. And I think the pattern did assume you knew to just join your new yarn and purl (as the first row of your knitting is purling) all the stitches that got picked up from the crochet process. So, pretend that you have half a sweater on your needles and you just need to attach a new ball of yarn. Simple as that. Best of luck!
