I had the wonderful task of accompanying a friend to "Needles and Pins", an
amazing yarn store in London, Ontario. Very drool-worthy.
Here you see pictured the Alchemy Yarn "Silk Purse" that I'll be using for my top.
I purchased the black ribbon from Michaels a couple days ago, but am now having second thoughts. Ever since I saw an episode of "What Not To Wear" where Stacey and Clinton said that wearing black with other colours "cheapens" the other colour, I
can't but agree with them!
So, the "dilemma" is:
should I keep with the black yarn, thus having a pink and black top
or
should I just buy another ribbon colour? If so, what colour? Perhaps brown? Cream?
I think it would be a little tricky to find an appropriately coloured pink to match.
What do you think?

Okay, you are just plain EVIL. That yarn combo is gorgeous (pink, black and sparkly silver were our 2004 wedding colors) and I now have another yarn shop on my list for our next trip from Detroit to Toronto.
I think the black and pink combo would be fab, but I am a bit biased. It looks luscious already. If you're worried that the black might look to 'heavy' at the neckline, a creamy white would be rather romantic. I'm hoping to finish my pink Wicked for V-day.
I think brown would look great and pink and brown are very "in" right now. Cream would make it look more classic. I like the black too but it will stand out a lot. I think your decision should be based on what look you are going. Gorgeous yarn!
I haven't looked at the eiffel pattern...could you have a couple of different ribbons? Maybe one in black, one in a deep blushy cream, one in fiesta orange... That pink yarn is B-eautiful!
Maybe a pale-ish pink or cream wouldn't jump out quite as much ... or heck, make a wee i-cord from your yarn & use it ...
The black and pink is gorgeous, but cream or grey or green would be lovely....
Those two on that show are more into trendy than they are fashion! Hence it's trendy to not wear black with other bright colors as it's the current trend. Classic fashion, however, has long worn black with all other colors!
I say poo poo on the trendy duo, go for fashion of black and pink!
I'm silly... you're knitting EIFFEL, not Wicked...
Black or cream would be lovely still, but a chocolatey brown might be nice too. (I am now absolutely no help - sorry!).
Black and pink is the sexiest color combination in existence, IMO. Do it! I was thinking of making my sweater black with pink ribbon.
I say do black - classic but ultra sexy with the pink :) Hey, if you absolutely hate it you can always unthread and go another colour or possibly crochet or icord to thread through.
i'm sure that stacy and clinton don't mean accents in black--they're talking about wearing a black suit with a pink satin blouse underneath, or a pink sweater and a black skirt--you know, equal or nearly equal proportions of each. and you do have to be careful about accenting black with bright colors not to look too '80s. but this is the reverse--a gorgeous silk pink that i know stacy would die for with a satin black ribbon. she would want to rip this sweater out of your hands and run to the nearest dressing room to put it on!
and the nice thing about ribbon accents is that you can change them out depending on your mood--a nice robin's egg blue, a muted platinum, charcoal grey, chocolate brown, or satiny black all work.
i love knitting with silk--just finished the simple knitted bodice in deep blue silk and i'm about to reknit sahara in platinum silk (my first one was too small). have fun!
I agree with 'what not to wear' - black and strong colours look cheap together (sorry lady who had that at her wedding!).
I think pink looks best with browns, lighter pinks, and purples.
In one of the Trinny and Susannah What not to wear books (UK version) they suggest combining a pink like that with an orange to clash, but in a nice way. Or with a duck-egg pale-ish blue.
Thank you so much everyone! I'm so glad to have so many helpful suggestions. As it's been pointed out, the ribbon can easily be changed depending on the mood. Great idea! Hmm, now I have a reason to go ribbon shopping... Off to Michael's!!
I'd say you could use brown, green or orange, depending on your mood. I think someone else already suggested this, but will you be able to swap out the ribbon to match your mood?
I agree with Jan. Those two are trendy, not right. Often, I think the choices they make are ... not the best. anyway... that black ribbon on the pink will be a lovely combination... almost wicked!
