Firtst kal..first post

Finally time to report in. I am knitting the skb with Debbie Bliss Apalca silk dk. It feels lovely - and pleased with the colour (damsom.) Although I used to knit prolifically as a student have not done so for years. I used to alsways make huge sweaters with acrylic, so this is a bit of a leap of faith for me - nice yarn and a fitted sweater. So far so good though. I am a bit worried it might be too small, but it does seem to fit (although it is definately fitted!) Am doing the lace right now. Although I joined it when the pattern said I knitted a few extra inches before the lace to get it under my chest. We'll see what the neckline looks like - think it might be a bit high, but that should be okay.

On a different note - was looking for advice about left handers and knitting. I am trying to teach my twin daughters to knit, but they are both left handed. I thought I would just teach then like a right handed person, but they are finding it quit awkward and want to move the wool using their left hand. So, do left handed people knit back to front or not?

Take care all.

Have you checked out knittinghelp.com? They have short videos on knitting techniques that you can watch that are great. Not sure if they have left handed instructions but it's worth a stop by to see. Also Debbie Bliss has a learn how to knit book with illustrations and instructions for lefties and righties. Good luck!

Whatever you do, don't get them knitting "mirrored" or "backward" (knitting off the right needle onto the left) as you will set them up for a lifetime of having to reinterpret pattern instructions.

Knitting is a two handed activity and everyone initially feels a little awkward with the motions. Some lefthanded people feel more comfortable with continental style knitting (where the yarn is held and tensioned with the left hand), but the work is still moving from the left needle onto the right.

Love the color! I think you will be glad it is a bit snug! As mine seems to be a bit too bit, I used the Silk called for in the pattern and it does seem to be growing a bit.

Have you thought about trying continental knitting with your girls? My cousin is a lefty and she knits continental. I myself was thinking about taking a class on it!

I'm left handed and I agree with Marlene. Make sure they go left to right. It took me years to undo my confusion on this. Now I mostly throw the yarn with my right hand though I can do continental as well. It is mostly a two handed activity. Good luck
