I nominate Simply Marilyn (warning - PDF!)
It is suitable for someone who is relatively new to knitting, and who may have missed the bandwagon originally. The off-the-shoulder design is fun and flirty, but warm and not overly revealing. It looks nice on a wide variety of body types, and can be dressed up or down. Debbie Bliss is listed as a "Friendly" yarn, but it would be easy find suitable substitutes.

I really like this. Very pretty.
I think this one looks good because I'm a beginning knitter and I need something fairly uncomplicated.
I love that one too, and it looks like a relatively simple pattern.
