Hi everybody,
I know that the Fifi knitalong is officially over but I'm truly hoping for words of wisdom to help me out. I tried on my Fifi multiple times as I was making it and noticed that the stitches under the arms elongated. (I used a backward loop cast-on.) So when I picked up and knitted from the cast stitches, I tried to spread the yarn out in the stitches along the whole sleeve. But when I finished it, I had this huge hole so I ripped back and tried again. This time I used smaller needles and held the tension snugly. It's better but still I have holes. I have no dropped stitches; I've counted and I have the right number. I'm afraid to put it on again because I think it will just get worse. My thought is to try to pull it together and treat it like I'm mending it. Is there a better solution? I love topdown patterns...how do I prevent this from happening again in my next sweater? (Obviously I'm new to making sweaters.) Please help. My Fifi is so beautiful otherwise.
Thanks in advance, Walk2Sing
I would suggest that you "mend" it. That is what I did to fix the funny spots around the bust darts.
ReplyDeleteI usually pick up a few extra stitches around the arm to avoid getting a hole. At this point, I'd just darn the holes up---it will look fine!
ReplyDeleteAlso, when picking up extra stiches under the arm, knit though more than one strand of yarn at a time -- this will make the existing stitches stretch less.
ReplyDeleteThis happened to me, too. I just sewed it up afterwards. You can't tell at all.
ReplyDeleteI "mended" the holes and the pattern has enough detail that the extra stitches don't show up at all. In the future, I think I will try picking up those few extra stitches. aliceindelbertland, i did pick up 2 loops per stitch. Are you suggesting that I go down more than one row? Thanks again for all the help. It really boosts the confidence level.
